Gallery Chosun will be featuring the exhibition "Passage" by German painter Ingo Baumgarten from February 07~27th. Ingo Baumgarten was born in German, studied in Japan, Taiwan, China, and settled in Korea. His artwork is a reinterpretation of his memories that he gained as he traveled and lived in various countries. At a glance, Baumgarten’s paintings seem organized, clean, warm, and pretty. However, there are individuals complicated social concerns behind the matter. His painting delivers familiar but unfamiliar city scenery which comes from his everyday life. Since he has now lived in Seoul for 9 years and stably settled, we can not simply call Ingo Baumgarten as a foreigner who interprets everything in European perspective. Just like other Korean artists, he is an artist who continuously tries to discover new values from daily life. From this exhibition, he will be presenting his recent works. Through his latest works, audiences can recognize the changes of our city and recall their own memories. Ingo Baumgarten paints our living city, and surrounding architectures. An architecture is an area which embodies people’s daily life, because it is a place where individual resides or works. Baumgarten believes building is more than just a space. He thinks it is the structure which contains culture and social values. In this matter, his paintings are the surface that closely deliver people’s desire within their life. He mainly focuses on the broken aesthetic balance of latest buildings due to efficiency, and disharmony between foreign style of architecture and Korean traditional style. Somewhat strange places become beautiful paintings through Baumgarten’s paintings. Moreover, city reveal people’s change of desire thorough architectures.. However, since Baumgarten is one of the human being who reside in the city, he could observe his own desire also. In this matter, he could monitor himself through his paintings. Through Baumgarten’s paintings, we can rediscover city sceneries during the last bit of winter season. It is a chance for the audience to observe deep in their city lives through the exhibition "Passages".

As all paintings, also mine unfold their effects on different levels. First, there is the aesthetic level of colors, forms and compositions. In their combination, those elements shape the aesthetic experience of the spectator. (...) Further, there are conceptual levels; my personal artistic approach is well described with the term visual anthropology, which is defined as "the exploration of everyday-live, culture and society with the methods of participating observation and its transformation in images and artworks". I discovered this term and its definition after working since long time in this manner. Already during my studies, more than 30 years ago, I wanted my work to be relevant by being linked to society and reality. Therefore, I based my work on my firsthand observations of society and reality, using myself as a representative model. (…) Since long time, I choose detail-aspects of my surroundings as the motives for my work, things and places which I find significant, typical and determining for specific environment and its atmosphere. I deal with different themes and motives according to my aesthetic, cultural, social, and historical interests. In the last years, I developed a strong focus on architecture and its appearance in everyday live. I am especially interested in the implicated ideals and ideologies of architectural forms and their change over the time. (…) In different contexts, there are various passages, all of them are in some way interesting for me: because in general, passages signify a connection and the moderation of differences: in space, time, or in condition ; – and they facilitate exchanges. With its position "in-between", the passage is an ambiguous place, effecting ambivalent positions. The passage connects the "Before" with the "After"; it is open to both sides and it invites to reflect about the past and the future while observing the present. _artist’s note
